A Beginner’s Guide when Purchasing Biker Gear
June 13, 2013
In the streets, you will find bikers cruising at 90 mph and yet they have no element, and are wearing a single ply tee shirt, open-toed sandals and probably with open arms. The best term to call them is “unwise.” However, as a beginner, you must purchase the appropriate biker gear and you will be a “wise” rider. When you have the right gear, you are likely to have a positive experience right from the beginning.
A helmet is a must-have item and has two purposes. The first one is to protect your head from hard asphalt. It also absorbs the shock brought about by an impact with the aim of minimizing damage. Today, you can purchase helmets almost anywhere. Therefore, being cautious will make a difference between concussion, manageable whack and worse. Do not purchase a helmet that has not been certified by CPSC. You also need to avoid making your choice based on the cost. Today, helmets like other biker gear
are also available in artistic designs and many colors. This should not sway you and instead, look for one that has proper fit and shell casing in addition to being safe and sturdy.
You will see more bikers in warm weather and many of them hop on their bicycles or motorcycles while wearing sandals or flip flops. The truth is that open toed footwear is not part of biker gear because they expose you to disaster. The feet cannot endure an accident. Again, your unprotected foot can easily be caught up in a spoke or chain. Boots are the best for riding. The best are those with a heel that is broad and low. For that extra stability, the sole needs to be stiff. Boots with rubber-composite or rubber-based soles will keep your feet well on the pegs. You will also have a great grip on pavements when you are not in motion.
When purchasing gloves as bike gear, the appropriate ones are those made from leather because they will give you a better grip and are also weather resistant. Those with reinforced palms tend to last longer. Gauntlets are optional and some riders purchase gloves with gauntlets attached with the aim of protecting their wrists. You must wear the gloves even when it is warm because you will be protected when an unfortunate event happens whereby your hands land on the pavement.
A leather jacket will not only keep you safe as a biker gear but will give you that iconic biker look. However, you must only purchase a jacket of good quality because you want a jacket that is impact resistant. Such a jacket will also resist shredding, tears and cutting. These jackets are available in different weights and style in that there are some that you can wear in any season.
Never forget that drivers must spot you with ease. Reflector vests and bright flights act as lifesaving choices that you must not leave out as you choose what to wear. You do not want a driver to hit you, only to claim that he saw you when it was too late. When you have the right biker gear, you will be much safer and more comfortable.
