There is a reason why “out of fashion” is in the title and not “old fashioned”. Old fashioned is trendy in a way. Young and elder generations that dress old fashioned still manage to look amazingly attractive. Some old fashioned styles are trendy for years and years, but what can we say about a style that has its name and the phrase “out of fashion” in the same sentence?
Baggy clothes were the style of the nineties. They emerged when the grunge era was born in Seattle on the US west coast and the Hip Hop culture developed dramatically on the US east coast. West coast rocker started wearing long baggy shirts with less baggy jeans compared to the hip hop rappers in the east. Hip hop in New York brought their music videos with a new style where wearing the baggies clothes made you the best looking music artist on the scene.
If we put aside grunge and hip hop music, let’s ask the question who would want to wear baggy clothes in the first place and why?
Baggy clothes were not born in the early nineties; they were in living long before they started appearing in music videos and on the street. People wearing baggy clothes were the ones that had a lot of weight around the hips and on the belly. Wearing baggy clothes is much comfortable than wearing tight pants or jeans.
For comfort or slightly for looks, baggy clothes took on the world of fashion in no time. It didn’t take too long for followers of grunge and hip hop music start wearing double-xl clothes. Clothes stores and sport shops were high in demand for new baggy jeans with side pockets on them. After rockers and rapper other cultures started hooking up – skateboarders, snowboarders, street ball players, fans of football and hockey, pop singers and boy-bands and etc. Male or female, baggy clothes were the most comfortable and possibly one of the most famous in the nineties. So, what happened to the baggy clothes 10 years later?
They are definitely not out of fashion and they can never be out of fashion. Even though grunge music is underground somewhere and Pearl Jam fans don’t surface as much as before; even though hip hop culture has evolved dramatically in the past decade; baggy clothes are still worn and sold.
People feel comfortable in baggy clothes – they can sit with on feet on the table (which is not cultural by the way), skateboarders can still make the same and new tricks, olds school rappers are still recording and wearing baggy jeans, the football stadiums are packed with fans wearing baggy jerseys, baseball players as well as basketball players wear baggy jerseys in order to improve agility and the fans are supportive by wearing their uniforms at games, and so on and so forth.
Baggy clothes are connected to casual free style spirit. For as long as there are baggy jeans and baggy t-shirts with catchy phrases and stylish pictures they will never be out of fashion.
