Even though spring has arrived here in New Zealand, we all know that the weather can change from sunshine to hail within a few hours. We like to be prepared for any occasion of weather, and that’s why our outfits generally reflect both a stylish and practical approach. If you’re planning on sorting out your wardrobe in the next couple of weeks to bring a few warmer-weather pieces to the front, here are a few suggestions for up-to-date styles for 2013-2014.
If you don’t already have a longline vest, head out and find one. I bought mine from a plus size clothes shop and it really adds an extra something to my outfit in spring, summer and autumn. My own vest is about knee length with a zip running up through the centre, reaching a dipped neckline. The design is burgundy with a lighter shade of line detailing; it’s gorgeous! Other great examples I’ve seen in the shops include beautiful teals and neutral stone colours. If you had a couple of these in your wardrobe you’d certainly wear them throughout the summer on our cooler days.
My next suggestion would be to add a tunic to your collection of clothes. I’ve bought two so far this year; both very different looks yet equally as stunning. The first one I found was a simple black design with panel detailing. I like to wear this with thin trousers and a chunky belt to give my shape a bit of definition. The other is a fun one with a sort of large leopard print but in different shades of blue. If you already have a tunic in your wardrobe it is time to find it as they’ll be really popular this year.
You can bring any outfit to life with a cardigan, and it has the added benefit of keeping you warmer than a simple long sleeved tee. You’re really able to express yourself here, so think about your personality when looking for a new cardigan. I’ve found a range of styles from simple black designs with mesh sleeves to sumptuous kimono prints in a waterfall shape. I think these cardigans look especially great with simple black trousers or a plain pencil skirt.
Long sleeved tops
It is sometimes a good idea to layer your clothes in New Zealand due to the unpredictable weather. For that reason I am a fan of long sleeved tops. I find that if you have a strappy top underneath, a swing top style can look excellent over it. This is also true for zip neck tops – and I just found a beautiful example of this in a slate grey tone. Again, these tops look stunning with slim and cropped trousers, as well as a simple pair of jeans for weekend wear. And if it is a bit cooler outside you can always put something over the top of your layers such as a light jacket or your new longline vest.
