Fashion trends seem to come and go more often than Taylor Swift’s boyfriends. We’ve seen neon, crop tops and plaid come and go in the past couple of years (and with good reason, I think!) – but skinny jeans have stood the test of time and have managed to prevail in the cutthroat world of today’s fast fashion.
I reckon the reason skinny jeans haven’t gone the way of bell bottoms or Capri pants is that they can be worn in so many different ways – by so many different fashion ‘tribes’.
Preppy girls look great with a pair of indigo skinnies, ballet flats and a blazer. Create a glam rock look by donning a black or grey distressed pair with heavy boots and a leather jacket. Even hipsters are in on the act (although they’d say they liked skinny jeans before anyone else did) – New Look do a very boho pair with removable braces and the ubiquitous rolled up leg.
And then there’s the fact that most body shapes can rock the skinny jean look.
Slim – pair your skinnies with this season’s hottest flat boots to show off your slender pins. Low-slung styles with a contrasting belt accentuate the waist.
Pear shapes – you might not think this style is for you, but you just need to find the right style. Super skinnies perhaps bring too much attention to the hips thanks to the tight ankle. Try an indigo or dark plum pair with a looser ankle paired with a long-line top – super flattering, especially with heels.
Apple shapes are known for their fantastic legs. Apples can rock pretty much any colour – just avoid low-slung styles that accentuate the tummy.
Plus sized – There are some fantastic styles out there that flatter the more curvaceous figure – just look out for those which have stretch and not too slim an ankle. Inspire at New Look does a particularly good range of well-cut skinnies in a wide range of colours.
Trends come and go, but the skinny jean reinvents itself around them.
Studding has been everywhere the past couple of seasons – skinny jeans with studded pockets appear. Colour trends change from month to month – so do the shades of skinny. You can already find pairs on the high street in Spring/Summer’s pretty pastel palette.
So – whatever your size or style there’s a pair of skinny jeans out there to suit!
